The School Houses
The school houses take their names from the main school benefactors, John Fereby (blue), Sir Baptist Hicks (red) and George Townsend (green). The house system is fiercely competitive in both academic and sporting activities. Students and staff, past and present, take their house allegiance very seriously with the three houses constantly vying for the prestige of winning the house cup at the end of each academic year – a tradition that dates back to the very early years of the School.
House points are awarded both for academic success and endeavour as well as for specific house competitions. You can see the current house point scores on our home page. These are updated after each major competition.
Events and competitions take place over the academic year. Click here to view the current house events calendar.
Heads of House Biographies
Head of Fereby
Miss Howells-Smith
Growing up locally, I remember competing against Chipping Campden School in sports fixtures and I am now a proud member of the school community.
In 2019 I studied Geography at the University of Birmingham and completed my PGCE with GITEP in 2022. I am studying for a Master’s in Education at the University of Bristol. In 2023 I began my teaching career, as a teacher of Geography at Chipping Campden School.
I feel privileged to have the opportunity to be Head of Fereby. I feel passionate about ensuring the house system is as effective and inclusive as possible, giving all students the chance to represent their house and experience success outside of lessons. My favourite house events include the wide variety of competitions from penalty shoot outs and bake offs, to the Big House Quiz.
I have loved my previous adventures to Morocco and Southeast Asia, climbing mountains and volunteering in rural communities. At university I discovered Lifesaving and have enjoyed sharing this fun and important sport with our students.
Head of Hicks
Mr Gullis
I am excited to take on the role of Head of Hicks House here at Chipping Campden School. Over the coming academic year we are aiming to build on the first piece of success the House has had in many years, championing sports day 23-24 before the summer break! I share and echo the thoughts of Miss Howells-Smith and Mr Fuller around the House system here at Chipping Campden School being the bedrock for belonging, allowing our students to participate in a range of activities throughout the year.
I personally came into the Chipping Campden School community in 2020 as a trainee Teacher of PE and instantly felt the unique sense of History and belonging. Having made the move back home after a 3 year stay in London working in the Healthcare system, I decided to train on the GITEP teacher training programme. My background is in Sports and Exercise Science, graduating in 2017 from Loughborough University. This lead to roles working in professional football, our Healthcare system and the corporate world.
Going into my 4th year as a teacher of PE here at Chipping Campden School, I am looking forward to seeing and celebrating our students’ achievements over the coming years.
Head of Townsend
Mr Fuller
I take great pride in my role as Head of Townsend at Chipping Campden School. I am particularly proud of the expansion of our House system, which now includes and celebrates the full spectrum of student effort and achievement, across and beyond all subjects, offering all students a chance to engage in something enjoyable and rewarding. Our House system aims to foster a strong sense of community and belonging, making every student feel valued and part of something bigger than themselves.
I studied Fine Art at the Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford, where I graduated in 2010. I have lived and worked in Brussels and Amsterdam, and spent two inspiring years in Mumbai, India, collaborating with artists and galleries. I am a practising artist and craftsman and I have been a potter for 9 years, including my time at Winchcombe Pottery, where the offer of an apprenticeship in 2016 inspired a move to the Cotswolds. I still make my own work outside of school and am a member of the Gloucestershire Guild of Craftsmen.
I became a father for the first time during lockdown (I have two daughters, 4 and 2), which prompted a significant life reassessment, steering me towards a career in teaching. I completed my teacher training through GITEP in 2022, and was fortunate to be placed at Chipping Campden School, where I have now been teaching Art for the past two years.
