The first round of 'A' Team matches in the Cotswold Floorball League started last night. Chipping Campden School (CCS), being a year older than their opponents should expect to do well, and gelled into a team even better than expected.
CCS suffered an early setback against St James when a forward was sent off for two minutes, yet prospered when Ruby Farrell scored. St James defended well and had several good breaks, only to shoot wide. The senior school's second goal was the result of a high deflection which Angus Tombs controlled and poked home against his old school. Tombs 'scored' again seconds later, but was rightly pulled up for high sticks. CCS 2-0 St James.
Blockley were next up for the senior school and suffered a 7-0 drubbing despite heroics from goalkeeper Andre Jeffrey. Farrell, Alexander Adams (twice), Tombs, Oliver Solomon (twice) and Olivia Peachey all scored in a good team effort.
St Davids were expected to be the toughest opponents, but had not been able to have a training session. Solomon and Tombs combined to net two early goals, then the Moreton team's lack of practice showed when a pass across the face of goal was intercepted by Ed Spencer who could not miss. CCS sat back somewhat at this stage, allowing a good break at the end of which Jo Winder pulled one back. As the CCS lines were changed, the Solomon-Tombs pairing added two more goals for a 5-1 win.
With full points CCS were guaranteed to top this qualifying table, but the really important games were now to come for the primary schools.
Blockley and St James seemed to be on the way to a goal less draw, Jeffrey repeating his efforts of the earlier game. Saints lost a player to the sin bin and it was this which allowed a bit off space in which Ethan Hill scored a short handed goal to give St James a late 1-0 win.
St Davids went on to defeat a tiring Blockley, proving adept at picking up rebounds after each of Jeffrey's best saves. Lewis Martin, Matthew Hitchings (twice) and Tom Allen all scored in this way. Thomas Chamberlain added a fifth on the break and Hitchings completed a hat trick when Winder's long, accurate pass evaded all defenders to be struck home first time. St Davids 6-0 Blockley.
This left St Davids and St James vying for the top qualifying spot and an easier path through the play offs. Chamberlain scored on a power play to put St Davids ahead, only for Toby Townsend to do the same for St James. It was a scramble in front of the St Davids goal which saw Hill poking home the winner. St James 2-1 St Davids.
Next week CCS, Bourton on the Water, Mickleton and St Catharines will meet in the next qualifying group for 'A' Teams.
